Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a cutting-edge technique used in oral and maxillofacial surgery and other surgical fields to accelerate healing and improve the outcomes of certain procedures. At our practice, we are proud to offer PRP as an option for our patients.

PRP is a concentration of platelets from the patient’s own blood that is used to promote faster tissue healing and regeneration. The process for using PRP in oral and maxillofacial surgery involves taking a small sample of the patient’s blood and processing it to isolate the platelet-rich plasma and platelet-rich-fibrin. This concentrated plasma is then injected into the surgical site or used in other forms to promote healing and regeneration.

There are several indications for using PRP in oral and maxillofacial surgery:

  1. One of the most common is in implant dentistry, where PRP can be used to promote faster integration of the implant with the jawbone or bone graft.
  2. PRP can be used in bone grafting procedures to improve bone regeneration.
  3. Iin periodontal surgery to help stimulate the growth of new tissue and prevent infection.
  4. Treatment of prevention of non-healing bone in patient taking bisphosphonate medication, promote faster healing of soft and hard tissue injuries and reduce the risk of infection.

PRP and PRF can be used in area of dental extraction such as wisdom tooth, to expedite healing, prevent dry-socket, promote bone regeneration for supporting adjacent teeth.

The use of PRP in oral and maxillofacial surgery is generally considered safe, as the patient’s own blood is used in the process. At WCOS we are committed to providing the highest quality care and the latest treatment options to help our patients achieve best outcome and optimal oral health and wellness. We work closely with each patient to determine if PRP is a suitable treatment option for their specific needs and goals.
